Green shoots

At the Creative Social last week we were each given a slightly dodgy looking can with some dry soil in the bottom – I did feel a bit of a tramp wandering home through Camden with an old can of cider in my hand, but Bedwood actually looked like one. Next morning I placed it in a sunny spot, watered it and today it sprung to life. It was all related to this month’s subject: Using Creativity to tackle climate change. The speakers were Lord Puttnam and Agency.com’s Andy Hobsbawn. Andy showed this film from Agency.com’s Do The Green Thing project. The film’s aim is to persuade people to buy less by showing you you’re a cock if you always ‘need’ the latest gadget – in this case the Mac Book Air. It raised an intersting debate about our own jobs and the fact that they rely on getting people to buy more. A hard thing to talk to our clients about in the current climate. Unfortunately, these are the only green shoots of hope I’ve seen in the recession-hit advertising industry lately!

Hello – just a point of clarification gents, I still work for Agency.com part time as European Chairman, but Do the Green Thing isn’t an Agency.com project at all – its a personal thing started by myself and creative director Naresh Ramchandani.

Loads of agencies contribute pro bono to Green Thing, Agency.com being one, along with the likes of BigMouthMedia, Profero, AKQA, Digit, Agency Republic, TBWA, Partizan, Blue Barracuda, Mission Media, Play/M&C, etc. As well as a load of creative individuals from musicians, animators, directors, poets, designers, actors, and so on.

Just important to us that Green Thing is seen as the 100% independent, not-for-profit thing that it is. ta!
